The Filipino people give great value to their tahanan— a place of comfort, a place to dry our tears, a place we can call home. Our founder, Karina Dela Cruz, through her roots and love for arts and design, makes it her mission to turn houses into homes.
Karina’s inclination towards arts and design started at the mere age of two. She used to run around their childhood home, filling all the walls with whimsy drawings and doodles.
At the age of eleven, she would accompany her grandmother, a seamstress, and her mother, an interior decorator, in sewing throw pillows, curtains, and other interior products that they sell. These strong women became her biggest inspirations, shaping and empowering her dreams to be a designer.
However, dreams do not magically come true overnight. Karina felt lost during her 20s, pressured by the responsibilities of growing up, and easily influenced by the expectations of others. She had to set her ambitions aside for the sake of survival. During the pandemic, she ventured into other lines of businesses—an online novelty store, a fashion brand, and even a marketing agency. But somehow, she always finds her way back to her home: arts and design.
In 2019, Karina took the leap of faith to pursue her lifelong dream. She revived what used to be her mother’s interior design firm, Extra Home Design, with a new business model and fresh branding strategy. But, the difficult journey to reach for the stars did not end there.
Karina worked harder to build her name, overcome the doubts of her peers, and rise above rejections. As a start-up designer, no one knew who she was and what she was capable of— until she styled a Christmas tree that showcased her talents and amazed everyone. With nothing but a small funding and a pocket full of dreams, the 22-year-old climbed that tree and reached for the stars.
Six years later, the business prospered into an interior and architectural design and build studio, with expanded services and a growing team. It now has increasing clients all over the Philippines and Dubai, leading small to big projects. Our founder, Karina Dela Cruz, hopes to have her story be an inspiration to all designers and dreamers out there—“I do not strive for perfection. What matters to me is showing up, trying, and putting in the effort to improve. You have to find peace with rejection and failing because experience is what will make you great at what you do.”
Extra Home Design has been turning houses into homes since 2008. We started as a part-time business in Laguna by selling curtains, doormats, carpets, custom bed sheets, and bedding. With no name to our little side hustle, we designed our products with the help of an in-house seamstress.
In 2012, we thought about our brand and began to call our informal interior design firm Extra Home Design. We created a Facebook page, which we used to promote our services. At this time, the team was beginning to engage in contractual design projects in Laguna and Isabela, while still making interior products for our existing clientele.
Our business temporarily closed for five years as the previous owner ventured in other lines of interest. But even with her presence gone, her legacy remains and it inspired Karina Dela Cruz, a rising Filipina entrepreneur, to revive the business and continue its operations.
In 2019, the firm re-opened with a fresh enthusiasm for the art of interior designing. The revival included a new branding strategy. We also commissioned a new logo, expanded our services, and developed a better business model.
2020 was a very challenging year for the firm as we faced numerous obstacles brought by the Covid-19 pandemic. Through dedication, hard-work, and faith, our team was able to develop new strategies that adapt to the changes of the time by offering online consultations and E-Design services. Despite the limitations of the pandemic and having only one leading designer, Extra Home Design has led various major projects in Pampanga, Isabela, Manila and Rizal. We continuously engaged with our trustworthy contractors to deliver the best services to our clients.
Our firm is dedicated to continuously evolving to deliver the best service to our customers and produce client satisfaction. From its humble beginning, Extra Home Design has now transformed into an interior and architectural design and build studio. We further expanded our services by catering to residential and commercial projects as well as landscape designs. With the help of our growing team, we have been commissioned to numerous major projects in the Philippines and in Dubai.
